The beautiful state of Alaska draws many cruise enthusiasts every summer who come to admire her majestic landscapes, awe-inspiring wildlife, and rich history and culture. This part of the world is vast and unpredictable, with summer weather varying from warm and sunny, or chilly and rainy. Guests generally prefer to back clothing items for a slightly cooler climate, that can be layered easily.
At Harr Travel, we have had the pleasure of cruising to Alaska many times, and know the ins and outs of what our guests should pack to be the most comfortable. In addition to clothing and shoes to keep you warm and dry, there are also several extra items you might not think to bring, but will greatly enhance your Alaska experience. Here our the top 5 must-bring extra items for an Alaska Cruise:
1.) SUNGLASSES
Eye protection is important on the sunny days in Alaska, especially if you are heading out on a glacier hike, or onto the water where there will be a lot of light glare. Even onboard the cruise ship, most ships have white decks that reflect the sun, so having a good pair of sunglasses can really help.
2.) WATERPROOF GAITERS
You will be spending a lot of time outdoors in Alaska. For those who will be hiking or trekking and need an option for waterproof shoes or boots, bringing gaiters along is a great option. They will slip on easily over your hiking shoes or boots and keep your pants and let dry as you brush past wet ferns and the damp forest floor.
3.) CAMERA & LENS
One of the most important things you can pack on an Alaska cruise is a camera. Between the landscapes, the wildlife, and the incredible activities, you will want to capture every movement for your keepsakes. We highly recommend a zoom lens for taking those amazing wildlife photos.
4.) BINOCULARS
Spotting wildlife in Alaska is the top priority for many passengers, and what better way to do it than with a pair of binoculars? While some luxury lines may provide binoculars, it's always a good idea to had your own pair to use in your stateroom, in the observation lounge, on the upper decks, or while out and about on a shore excursion.
5.) REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE
Bringing your own water bottle is highly recommended for a cruise, as on most contemporary cruise lines water bottles come at an additional cost. Water from the buffet and at drink stations around the ship is free, but if you do not have your own bottle, you will only be able to utilize the provided glasses. Being able to fill up your own bottle before head out on an active shore excursion in Alaska is a game-changer, so don't forget your water bottle at home!
