Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year, and arguably the best place on earth to experience the brilliance of the fall foliage is New England.  Cruises to New England are in full swing at this time of year, giving guests the opportunity to see the incredible autumn colors in all their glory!  While many people road trip to the region at this time of year, taking a cruise is an ideal way to enjoy a New England fall getaway.

Time it right, and you will be able to see the different stages of the fall leaves as you travel up the coast.  Many cruises begin in NYC or Boston, where you may see the start of the foliage turning.  As you work your way up to Portland, Maine, or Acadia National Park, you may find peak foliage, with brilliant yellows, red, and oranges.  Some ships also travel to Canada, and you will be able to experience the season across the border as well.

BOSTON | If you begin your journey in Boston, be sure to take an extra day if you can to experience the city, whether on your way in or way out.  The city is very walkable, and has plenty of history, delicious eateries, and incredible parks and nature throughout, so you will be able to see the fall leaves, even in the heart of Boston.

PORTLAND | Fall along the Maine coastline is like no other!  See the beauty of the red and orange hues along the rocky shoreline as you visit the famous Portland Head Lighthouse, or peruse the seaport district along the water.

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK | There is no better way to experience nature than in a National Park, and to see the brilliance of the fall foliage in New England’s only national park, Acadia, is on another level!  Get out on hikes, walk through the quaint villages, and enjoy the incredible beauty of the seashore in this untamed part of the world.

CANADA | Experience the small seaside towns and villages along the Canadian coastline along the Bay of Fundy, or up to the wilds of Nova Scotia.

When to Go

One of the biggest questions in regards to visiting New England in the fall is what time will the fall color be at peak?  Because of the size of the region, each area will hit peak fall color at different times.  The northern most regions will experience color first, and it will slowly make its way down south.  You can find fall color from late September, to mid/late October, depending on the area.  So fear not, because if you plan your trip in late September, you may begin your journey seeing less color, but as the ship works its way up the coastline, the color will become more and more brilliant.  It will be similar, but reverse if you go in mid/late October.  You may begin your journey will brilliant leaves in the south, and then find that north is past peak.  So no matter what timeframe you choose, you are sure to see some beautiful fall leaves during your trip!
